Digital Media and Entertainment Arts: DMEA
This course replaces Computer Art A variety of projects will be posted here as well as all the digital portfolio/sketchbook checks for the year. Below is the syllabus link and computer lab agreement.
Required supplies:
Folder with pockets and computer paper or sketchbook USB/flash drive to save files Pencils Optional supplies: Disinfectant Wipes Tissues Personal headphones Grade breakdown: Production/Creating: 55% Digital Portfolio/sketchbook: 10% Tutorials: 15% Class Practice/Quiz: 20% Semester Exam 20% of over-all grade for 8th grade Homework is posted on the weebly and/or in class. Progress reports are required to be signed by a parent/guardian and returned for a homework grade that the student is accountable for. If the printed progress report is lost, a written letter is acceptable. Advertising Unit:
After learning about advertising techniques (bandwagon, plain folk, glittering, emotional, scientific, testimonial), target zone (who the product is being made to sell to), and basic design principles students will create their own product. The task then is to us photoshop to create 3 different advertising samples for a project grade. Student Expectations:
Students are expected to explore, plan projects out/storyboard, sketchbook, be creative and original with work, follow directions on the rubrics, do proper layout formats, use professionalism, craftsmanship/neatness, and use advanced critical thinking skills. This class will be challenging as it takes practice to become proficient in photoshop. Use the force and become a digital arts master! Regarding file management and deadlines: It is the student responsibility to save their files on their own USB/flash drive as well on their assigned computers daily. Deadlines will not be changed for lost projects or assignments and will still be expected to be turned in on time. Projects not turned in properly will not be graded and receive a zero.Projects turned in late will receive 10 points off a day.Assignments over a week late will receive a grade of F. If you miss class/need more time to meet a deadline: Please see Mrs. Jones to setup a time as it is the students responsibility to meet deadlines for all assignments. After and before school times can be planned as well as working during lunch. If an extenuating circumstance occurs please inform Mrs. Jones to work out details. Computer/Equipment Privileges: A signed computer lab agreement must be returned to Mrs. Jonesbefore students will be permitted to use the technology. Students will be assigned the same computer and tablet for the length of the class. In the event that a student does not comply with the policies the student will not be permitted to use any technology for the duration of the class. Square 1 Art Photoshop Mini-Drawing Project:
For a homework grade plan three different thumbnail sketches that meet either criteria listed below for the Square 1 art PS mini-drawing project. You will then take the plan that you feel is the strongest and develop it for rendering in photoshop using the tablet. You will be graded on the following areas: clearly follow 1 criteria choice, strong composition *use the space will on the page*, proper file turn in *.jpeg*, craftsmanship *how neat your work is*, and properly filling out the Square 1 sheet and professional gluing. Criteria choice 1: Use high contrast with 1 to 3 colors to create an artwork that plays with the concept of positive and negative space. See the light bulb sample. Criteria choice 2: Use a strong light source in your artwork to show the use of values and shadows. See the lighting bug sample. Surrealism meets digital art with a splendid new look. Students will make digital montages. A digital montage is an art form combining two or more photographs digitally to create a new image. Photo manipulation, digital montage, composites, and photo editing are terms that can be used interchangeably. Photo editing: Animal Collage Project
Take a look at the wonderful creature creations. Your task is to create an animal collage using PS that follows the rubric below. Rubric: 30 pts- Blending Believability 20 pts- Theme is unified *different objects work together* 10 pts- Composition: Use of space on the page visually laid-out well 20 pts- Pixel quality 10 pts- Proper file size/ 12- dpi full page 8x10 inches 10 pts- Proper file name and block: bob j s4 photoplay.jpeg Total 100 points Fontbots! Students will select a font type to create their own creature in Adobe Photoshop (PS). This is a fun way to introduce typography, contrast, balance, and basic tools in photoshop: rotate, copy, paste, skew, mirror, select tool, marquee tool, and layers. Photography Unit:
Anyone can take a picture, but to better understand what good composition is a bit more tricky. Rule of thirds is key to creating a good photo with strong composition. Please see the link as using the rule of thirds is required. Students will learn about composition and an assortment of digital photography tricks commonly used in Photoshop. Photography Techniques: Double exposure is a photographic technique that combines 2 different images into a single image. The technique has been practiced for several years, and it became particularly famous recently, due to the fact that graphic editors like Photoshop can help to create the identical effect. Double exposure Link Link 2 Boat n' Hand is a type of optical illusion where the photographer plays with placement of the camera and the figures in the picture frame to create a clever placement of perspective. Silhouette is the image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject. The interior of a silhouette is featureless, and the whole is typically presented on a light background, usually white, or none at all. Black and white/Sepia photography creates a since of timelessness and stronger emotions in photography. Sepia toning is a specialized treatment to give a black-and-white photographic print a warmer tone. Emphasis in art is a principle of design which occurs any time an element of a piece is given dominance by the artist. In other words, the artist makes part of the work stand out, in order to draw the viewer's eye there first. For this photography unit to create emphasis we will us color and/or blur tools. Character Design Project:
We have looked at a brief history of animation and many characters from Disney to Warner Brothers. The task at hand is to design a character with a back story that will be used for your 1st animation later this year. Cel Animation Project:
Create a traditional cel animation using acrylic paints to make a still like how Disney and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs did back in 1937. Students will be required to draw or to find an image of one black contour line drawing of one character, which will then be printed on clear acetate paper for acrylic cel painting. At least one level of shading will be required for this process. Finish stills will then be placed on a background that the students make. The image can not have any backgrounds. Color Theory Project: Color blocking and mood
Students will study color theory here and then study the three color theory charts: Link: color chart 1 Link: color chart 2 Link: crash color concepts Next complete this assignment in Photoshop. Open the image in photoshop and on a new layer using the paint tool do the worksheet digitally. When finished post a jpeg on your blog and explain which color theory you enjoy the most. Students will next learn about Casey Lowe, a famous story board artist for Pixar and Disney who is alive! If you want to know more about Eric Goldberg click his name after reading about Casey Lowe. Poster Project:

Game Unit:
This project will have 3 project grades to break up the large task of creating a video game. Students are permitted to work alone or group up. Please note that if you group up and if groups have to be ungrouped for any reason that you will be responsible to work alone and to catchup on all work.
